We are strongly committed to the biodiversity of animals. This is one reason several years ago we made a large investment in the Leicester Longwool sheep. Our flock has actually decreased in numbers because we eliminated those that had little parasite resistance. Former owners in their zealousness to increase livestock numbers actually dewormed their adult sheep every 3 weeks. We do not think that this is sustainable, nor do we want to increase the numbers of frail sheep dependent on antiparasitics to new owners.
This spring of 2009 we made a large investment in some heritage breed turkey eggs. We have 17 Palm turkeys, 7 bronze/ bourbon crosses and one Narragansett( not all hatches were successful- shipping can cause havoc with fertile eggs). The Beltsville whites did not hatch at all-what a disappointment.
We have a nice batch of geese that should be ready for the Christmas market( providing that we win the war with the fox).
